“Learning is Permanent, when it is Fun,” is the simplified mantra of MudPies & Butterflies.
Welcome to the online community of Fun, Learning and Curiosity. Since 2009, I have been creating excitement and a love of learning by embedding hands-on fun into a variety of subjects like nuclear physics, molecular biology, algebra and ancient history…, believe it or not, for children ages 5-10. My gift is making complicated concepts easy. With a four-man see-saw children as young as three learned the basics of Algebra; by burying pottery in the sandpits and stringing up quadrants, children discovered Pompeii’s demise and the methodical nature of archeology; by tasting eight different types of honey and imitating bee scouts in dance, children plotted angles of bee communication and learned of nature’s interdependence and interconnectedness.
Drawing from educational pioneers like Steiner, Montessori, and Fleming, and staying true to non-violent communication (NVC) models, Jessica encourages children (as well as adults), to share their unique perspectives, honor their emotions, and practice conflict resolution. Evidence of this is apparent in the following lessons: Peace Building and Letting Anger Go; Heros of the Globe: Freedom, Rights & Responsibilities; and Ethics & Fairytales.
This 3-dimensional learning takes place in middle of an afternoon of free-play at a bucolic park in the west side of the San Fernando Valley. For everyone’s safety, the location is not disclosed, but personally communicated. Occasionally, due to inclement weather, the location might occur at a beach, pool, bowling alley or library. Monthly dues of $5 per family cover the cost of lessons, activities and crafts that occur in the midst of a day long parkday. This weekly co-op occasionally has openings. Inquiries are always welcome. One of our biggest differinetiators is a commitment to practing and modeling conflict resolution skills. This means that the emotions and intent of the children (and adults) is honored and respected. And that parents stay present to help facilitate and encourage conflict resolution. Because the education of our soul and character is as important as academics, if not more so.
M&B sponsored fieldtrips in LA, OC and Ventura counties are open to all homeschooling families and have a fee ranging from $5-$20 per family. The fee includes an original curriculum created by myself, Jessica Deltac like the Birth of our Country @ the Skirball, or Prisms, Lens & Lighthouses @ Palos Verdes Lighthouse.
Below is an archival list of past Themes and the hotlinks to that page with documents the hands-on activities to make the learning permanent and fun. In addition is the list of past and upcoming Fieldtrips and the cost & Information.
